Metro North Interclub Pairs 2020

Peninsula Bridge Club hosted the Metro North Interclub Pairs on Sunday 27 Sep with 116 players across four fields: U15, U100, U300 and Open. It was held online on BBO this year, with Ronnie Ng and Alan Bustany as our directors.

Three regional clubs, North Shore Bridge Club, Trumps Bridge Centre and ourselves, entered full fields, with an additional two pairs from Narrabeen RSL and Killara Bridge Clubs joining Trumps to balance the numbers from these three. Successes were varied across the four fields:

September Online Pairs competition - Result

It has now been decided not to have an extra fifth round of this competition due to there being the Bridge Education Anniversary clubhouse session on Sept 29th (there will be an open BBO session at 1.30), so the winners are the pairs with the best three results after the fourth round, which was directed by Heidi Colenbrander without the intervention of BBO or any other gremlins!  Accordingly, I am pleased to announce the winners:

Open Division: Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies

Under 200 Division: Chris Dixon and Robert Gaven

Under 35 Division: Savitri Newman and Simon Hunter

Congratulations to all of these and to everyone who took part. A full listing of scores can be accessed here.

We shall be holding a similar cumulative event in October

October Online Pairs competition

The Over 50 Division of the October Online Pairs resulted in a photo-finish with less than 0.4 points separating the first three finishers. Lynn Baker and Jim Stewart won by a short head from Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies with Lois and Terry Rothwell an even shorter head behind in third place.

In the Under 50 Division, Lyn Talmont and Susan Eason faltered a bit at the last fence but their consistent form over the earlier jumps carried them through to a comfortable win over Christine Marcroft and Lidy Seysener with the Colenbrander brothers a respectable third.

Congratulations to the winners and place-getters and, indeed, to everyone who took part.  You can see the results here.

We will have a one-off all-comers event next Tuesday (while an even bigger horse race takes place) but we are planning another flagship cumulative online event for Tuesdays in November and early December. There will be red points on offer and, so that everybody has a chance, there will be three Divisions, based on Masterpoints as at Sept 30, 2020: Under 20, Under 150 and Open. Look out for more details here and in your Inbox!

Concept plan of Players Hall

Introducing the Warriewood Valley Community Centre

You can view the Council's Public Exhibition and have your say here and in particular the Players Hall which will be our new home when the Centre is complete.

Northern Beaches Council on 25 August unanimously approved taking this concept design to Public Exhibition during September with the results of that engagement to be reported back to Council at its October meeting. Provided the Public Exhibition results are generally favourable it is expected that Council will approve proceeding with the Development Application.

Our new clubhouse meets the important needs of the club:

Michael Marks Shield 2020

The 2020 Michael Marks Shield was run at the clubhouse on the afternoon of Thu 27 Aug - the first special event to be run in our reopened COVID-Safe clubhouse. Red points were awarded.

Congratulations to Vince Cariola and Sue Hapek who won the event, narrowly over runners-up Heidi Colenbrander and Ray Hurst, and Linda Abbenbroek and Jan McLennan in third place.

Michael Marks was Peninsula's president for 4 years while we were arranging our first dedicated clubhouse connected to the Nelson Heather Centre. He was instrumental in negotiating a favourable long term lease agreement and designing the space we have.

Thanks to Cassandra Mitchell for convening and directing the event.

Centurion: Patricia MacDougal

Many members of the club will remember Patricia MacDougal who was a member until 2017 and who recently turned 100 on the 10th of August. Congratulations and our best wishes.

Volunteers to the Rescue

The now infamous words 'in these unprecedented times' aptly describe the last 5-6 months during which our club has reinvented itself, both online and with a 'different' clubhouse reopening on 29 June.

Many members have worked tirelessly so our members could stay connected and play bridge. Who could have imagined six months ago how active Peninsula players would become in online pairs and teams tournaments?

At the same time investigations were made about how and when the club could reopen and comply with the relevant Public Health Orders - and then appropriate procedures were developed and implemented. The clubhouse may not be the same as pre-COVID-19, but it's open, and we are cautiously moving forward under the mantra 'Safe Bridge=Great Bridge'.
