2017 Charlie Mitchell Shield

Fourteen pairs fought for the 2017 Charlie Mitchell Memorial Shield on Saturday 19 August. This one session event is held in memory of Charlie Mitchell who died in 2002. The Shield, donated by Patricia and Ian Giles, describes Charles as "Honorary Life Member, Past President - five years, Past Chief Director, a bridge player extraordinaire and a gentleman."

In 2017 Vivien Eldridge and David Farmer prevailed ahead of Jutta Gradwell and Sue Riley and Anne Small and Hans van Weeren.

Peninsula at Coffs Coast Gold Congress

More than 20 Peninsula players journeyed to Coffs Harbour in early August to challenge bridge players from across Australia in the 2017 Coffs Coast Gold Congress. The event again filled very quickly and those fortunate to attend experienced superb weather, a great venue, a well-organised event, and some tough bridge.

Peninsula's success was far more solid in the restricted categories than in the open fields but we managed to appear in the prize lists in most categories. You can check the full results - on the events results cover page you will notice Peter Clarke and Hans van Weeren are featured as the best pair below 300MP in the Swiss Pairs event.

NSW State Individual Champion - Cath Whiddon

The NSW State Individual tournament was held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the NSWBA premises in Sydney.  And our very own Cath Whiddon was the winner!  Well done Cath.

This was a fun day consisting of 2 sessions and open to players of all levels.  Partners were not needed as you play with all entrants during the day;  and only simple systems are allowed.

Central West Novice Tournament - 28/29 October

Bathurst & District Bridge Club will hold the 3rd edition of the Central West Novice Tournament over the weekend of 28 and 29 October 2017 and invite members of our club to come along for a weekend of bridge, good food, great company and friendly competition.

This is a wonderfully run and very friendly congress for those with zero to 50 masterpoints. It is an excellent first congress for less experienced players.

2017 Australian Restricted Championships - PBC’s bid for glory

Hans Van Weeren and I went to Canberra to represent NSW in the Australian Restricted Championships, along with us were Cassandra Mitchell and Clare Filmer-Ramsay ready to do battle for the glory of being Australia’s No 1 Restricted Pair. The Tournament format was Swiss Pairs, Imps, with 15 tables. The competition was fierce with pairs representing most Australian States and Territories being in attendance.

The venue was at the Canberra racetrack, but they didn’t have the air-conditioning up and running on the first morning and it was bitterly cold, perhaps giving the Canberrans a home advantage? Fortunately this was the only occasion, however we nearly succumbed to exposure. For our first match, a pair from NZ must have wondered what was happening as the woman to my right spent the entire session huddled inside her Parka, literally shivering.

Terry and Lois win Swiss Pairs 18 July

Terry and Lois Rothwell won the Swiss Pairs on Tuesday 18 July, holding off challenges from several other pairs.

The guest expert on this Challenge night was Richard Douglas who spoke on the topic of gaining and keeping a good partner. It was noticeable that there was far less bickering between partners for the rest of the night - may it last!
